Robben Island in South Africa is one of the best tourist destinations. Robben Island is also called as Robbeneiland by African people. It is about 6.9 km west of the coast of Bloubergstrand, Cape Town, Capital of South Africa. The Robben Islands are also nicknamed as “seal island.” The satellite view of these islands is egg-shaped with an area covering of 5.07 km² and few meters above from the sea level. These Islands were declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site and also as National Heritage site for South Africa.

History of Robben Islands

The tale of Robben Island began in Sixteen hundred fifty-two (1652) when Jan van Riebeeck landed in Cape Town on orders from the Dutch East Indian Company to set a post where boats could harbour on the way to the East. He later used it as a place for criminals.

Nobel Prize winner and late president of South Africa Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years before the fall of apartheid. The other personalities like Kgalema Motlanthe, Jacob Zuma-current President of South Africa were also jailed in Robben Islands, and hence for visitors, it starts with Nelson Mandela Gateway.

Robben Island entrance fee and timings

The entrance fee to Robben Island is around (South African Rand) R300 for adults and R160 for children. You have the ticket cancellation facility within the 14 days of prior of your tour and cancellation charge will be R50 per ticket.
Timings to visit Nelson Mandela Gateway will be from 07:30 to 18:00 every day. But however, due some conditions visitors are limited to only 1800 members allowed to visit in a day.
